Matted carpets are the most difficult to revive. Vacuuming the carpet, over time, causes the fiber in the carpet material to tangle. Eventually, rough textured patches will appear. Aside from being unsightly, the patches will feel stiff. One way to revive matted carpets is to try to fluff the carpet by using a hair dryer. Gently let the heated air from the dryer blow on to the patch. Be sure to hold the dryer at a distance to prevent the fibers from getting burned. You also can try spraying some warm water on the matted patches before blow drying. Fluff with your fingers or the edge of a spoon. Let dry completely before walking on it.
Fraying happens as you walk over loosened edges or damaged areas in the carpet. The fabric starts folding up or threading out. With very sharp scissors or a knife, trim the frayed edges of the carpet. Roll back the edge of the carpet and apply a thin layer of adhesive glue on the underside. Do not let the carpet roll back in place. After the glue dries, roll the carpet back into place and use double sided carpet tape to secure it to the floor.
After moving heavy furniture, you are often left with crushed carpet pile. One tip you can try is to place ice cubes on the area. Leave the ice cubes until they melt and then allow the area to dry. Afterwards, vacuum the area thoroughly. The dented areas of the carpet will naturally come back to shape. However, you should use caution when attempting this. Be sure the floor surface underneath the carpet can withstand the moisture. Also, this should only be done on carpeting that can be cleaned with water.
Use the tips mentioned here and you should be able to revive and renew your carpet.
