Simple is best
The tools you need for cleaning grout lines in your tile floor are pretty simple: A broom and a stiff bristled tile brush. Start any grout cleaning project by thoroughly sweeping the grout lines to remove any loose dirt. That gives you clear access to the dirty grout lines.
Which grout cleaning product do you use?
Choosing your grout cleaning product is a bit more complicated. Many homeowners swear by chlorine bleach to clean grout. That is the same bleach you use to get your laundry whites bright. Chlorine bleach can be effective for cleaning white or light gray grout lines. However, for darker colored grout, it can fade the color diminishing the look of your tile floor or stone floor. The fumes also makes it hazardous to use.
Overusing harsh grout cleaners that can erode and damage the grout lines in your tile floor or stone floor, requiring repair or replacement in short order. To avoid this problem, most experts recommend starting with the mildest solution possible and only going to the harsher solutions when needed.
Start with water. Spray warm water on the grout lines and use the stiff-bristled tile brush to scrub the grout. Rinse the area with more water. You will be amazed at the amount of dirt that comes up. This is the most basic and safe grout line cleaning solution.
If you find you have some mild stains to remove, or have some heavy dirt lingering in those grout lines, spray a 50 percent solution of vinegar and water on the stains and let sit for 5 minutes. Scrub it and rinse with water again. If you still have not gotten the grout lines in your tile floor or stone floor clean, try a solution of baking soda and water. Make a paste and cover the stained areas. Spray the paste with the vinegar solution. The solution should start foaming. Once it does, start scrubbing the grout line with the brush. Rinse the area with water and see the results.
For still tougher stains, the next step is hydrogen peroxide. Apply it either straight on the stain, or as a paste mixed with baking soda. Scrub and rinse as before.
Now, you may find that the grout line has some deep hard stains that are not coming out. This is the point where you bring in the stronger cleaning products. Oxygen bleach is a good starting point. This usually comes in a powder form. Follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly and have good ventilation. Rinse the cleaning product completely away.
If the oxygen bleach does not do the trick on your grout lines, you may need to bring out the commercial cleaning products. These should only be used sparingly in the areas where there are deep stains. Use them according to manufacturer instructions. Scrub and rinse the area thoroughly.
At this point, you should have clean grout lines and a tile floor or stone floor that looks renewed.
What can you do if your grout will not come clean?
If you find that no amount of cleaning will get that grout lines clean, you have a couple of options: replace the grout or replace the tile.
