Advantages and disadvantages of marble floors
There are both advantages and disadvantages to marble flooring. Obviously, the appearance and longevity of this flooring is quite appealing. While there is plain white marble, most of the marble used in home décor has some sort of color and pattern to it. Since it is a natural material, the color and pattern are never exactly the same. Also, these tiles are hard, and will last a long time if properly maintained and not physically damaged. Marble is also great for allergy sufferers since it will not trap allergens.
One of the disadvantages to polished marble flooring is that there is little friction against the surface, especially when wet. Marble tiles can become a potential slipping hazard in the wrong spot. Selecting honed, tumbled or brushed tiles can provide more traction. Another disadvantage is that marble is cold underfoot, which can be uncomfortable.
Installation of marble tiles
New installations of marble should be treated with both a below surface sealer and a surface finishing treatment. This treatment makes the flooring less porous and creates a protective layer on top. A good installation will ensure there are no gaps between the flooring layers that can allow moisture in or create weak spots. Grout lines can be a vulnerable area so make sure the grout is being sealed. Larger tiles will mean fewer grout lines to maintain so you will want to consider that when choosing tile for your project.
Untreated marble is susceptible to damage from things that are acidic. Some common examples are fruit juices, vinegar mixtures, soft drinks, and many soaps and cleaning agents. These acidic things cause a chemical reaction that discolors and permanently damages the floor. Any spills should be wiped up immediately with a damp cloth. Making sure the tiles are sealed regularly can help protect against this type of damage. Never use an acid based cleaner on a marble floor.
Cost of marble tiles for your home
There is a wide range of cost when it comes to marble tile flooring. These tiles can cost as little as $3 per square foot to up to $15 to $20 per square foot, one of the more expensive natural stone flooring options available. Beware of extremely low priced marble, as the product you often receive is either cracked or irregular.
