Prevent stains from wicking
Whether you can remove the stain for good depends on how much was spilled and how long the liquid was on the carpet. If the spill is relatively small and still wet, you can take a clean, lint-free towel or paper towels and press it against the stain, so that it soaks up as much of the liquid as possible. Placing something heavy on top of the towel for larger spills helps to ensure that more of the liquid is absorbed. Leave the towel in place overnight for best results. The following day, clean your carpet using a carpet cleaning agent and water.
The underpad problem
A spill left unattended may make its way to the underpad. If the underpad has an extensive stain, you probably will not be able to prevent the stain from wicking. Sometimes, people cut out the affected portion of the underpad and replace it with a new piece. However, this is not an easy solution because it may be difficult to match the density or thickness of the pad. It may be easier to replace the entire pad, rather than just a small piece.
Obviously, the best course of action is to act quickly and absorb as much as possible. When that fails, a professional carpet cleaning company may be able to help.
